Supervision and Consultation

FAQs

What is the difference between supervision and consultation?

Supervision and consultation are important components of the training and ongoing professional development of pre- and licensed psychologists. These processes provide clinicians with guidance, feedback, and support from experienced professionals in the field.

Supervision is a structured and ongoing process in which a licensed psychologist supervises a pre-licensed psychologist in their clinical work. The supervisor provides feedback on the pre-licensed psychologist's clinical skills, helps them develop their therapeutic approach, and ensures that they are adhering to ethical and professional standards. Supervision is typically required for pre-licensed psychologists as part of their training and licensure process.

Consultation, on the other hand, is a more informal process in which a licensed psychologist seeks guidance and support from another experienced professional in the field. This can be done on a one-time or ongoing basis, and can cover a wide range of topics, including clinical case consultation, professional and ethical issues, and professional development.

Why should I engage in supervision/consultation?

Both supervision and consultation are essential for pre- and licensed psychologists to develop their skills, gain perspective on their work, and ensure that they are providing high-quality, ethical services to their clients. It is important for psychologists to seek out experienced supervisors and consultants who can offer them valuable feedback, guidance, and support throughout their careers.
